Cipolotti L, Bird C, Good T, et al. Recollection and familiarity in dense hippocampal amnesia: a case study. Neuropsychologia 2006; 44:489-506. This study described in detail the anterograde memory abilities of patient V.C. His selective hippocampal damage was further confirmed by VBM and spectroscopy (functional MRI results are described by Maguire et al. [24]).

The hippocampus supports both the recollection and the familiarity components of recognition memory
-
Wais PE, Wixted JT, HopkinsRO, Squire LR. The hippocampus supports both the recollection and the familiarity components of recognition memory. Neuron 2006; 49:459-466. This interesting study reported that amnesic patients with selective hippocampal damage perform similarly to healthy adults in terms of recollection and familiarity if performance is equated for difficulty. In both groups recollection decays before familiarity but familiarity is impaired by hippocampal damage.

'Where to?' remote memory for spatial relations and landmark identity in former taxi drivers with Alzheimer's disease and encephalitis
-
Rosenbaum RS, Gao F, Richards B, et al. 'Where to?' remote memory for spatial relations and landmark identity in former taxi drivers with Alzheimer's disease and encephalitis. J Cogn Neurosci 2005; 17:446-462. This interesting study demonstrated intact remote memory for spatial layouts but not for landmark recognition in patients with lesions involving the MTL.
