Although supported ionic liquid catalysis has been investigated recently, there are no examples of the combination of silica-supported metal catalysts with ionic liquids. It is reported that silica gel supported ionic liquids and additional nonsupported ionic liquids form ionic-liquid phases on the surface of silica gel owing to interactions between supported and nonsupported ionic liquids. See a) C. P. Mehnert, R. A. Cook, N. C. Dispenziere, M. Afeworki, J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2002, 124, 12 932-12 933;
