Besides Macquisten and Winterton, the most obvious old-style pugilists were James Maxton, the I.L.P. leader, and David Logan, the Labour M.P. for Liverpool, Scotland. Maxton thought M.P.s had become overly concerned about the breaking up of meetings, while in a speech apparently made 'under the influence'. Logan observed. 'I am an Irishman who believes in a scrap. I am anxious to fight if it is necessary to fight' (Hansard, 5, Commons, ccxc, cols. 1992, 2024).
