Part III: Critical review of published peer-reviewed observational and interventional studies and final recommendations. Pediatr Allergy Immunol 2004; 15:291-307. This critical review by a group of experts of the Section of Pediatrics, European Academy of Allergology and Clinical Immunology (EAACI) examined published peer-reviewed observational and interventional studies (n = 8) and determined that there was no conclusive evidence for the protective effect of maternal exclusion diets during lactation for allergy prevention in high-risk infants.

Effect of cooked and raw egg consumption on ovalbumin content of human milk: A randomized, double-blind, cross-over trial

Palmer DJ, Gold MS, Makrides M. Effect of cooked and raw egg consumption on ovalbumin content of human milk: a randomized, double-blind, cross-over trial. Clin Exp Allergy 2005; 35:173-178. This randomized, blinded, crossover, intervention trial of lactating women (n = 41) investigated the presence of ovalbumin in human milk after maternal egg consumption. Ovalbumin was detected in the breast milk of 68% of women up to 8 h after the ingestion of one cooked egg, and confirmed that even after maternal ingestion of the same challenge dose of egg, the concentration of ovalbumin detected in human milk was highly variable between women.

Breast milk fatty acid composition is associated with development of atopic dermatitis in the infant
-
Hoppu U, Rinne M, Lampi A-M, Isolauri E. Breast milk fatty acid composition is associated with development of atopic dermatitis in the infant. J Pediatr Gastrenterol Nutr 2005; 41:335-338. This cohort study in high-risk infants found lower levels of n-3 PUFA in breast milk samples collected at 1 month of lactation from mothers whose infants developed atopic dermatitis during the first year of life.

The ratio of n-6 to n-3 fatty acids in maternal diet influences the induction of neonatal immunological tolerance to ovalbumin
-
Korotkova M, Telemo E, Yamashiro Y, et al. The ratio of n-6 to n-3 fatty acids in maternal diet influences the induction of neonatal immunological tolerance to ovalbumin. Clin Exp Immunol 2004; 137:237-244. This study investigated the influence of different ratios of n-6 to n-3 fatty acids in the maternal diet during late gestation and throughout lactation on the induction of neonatal oral tolerance to ovalbumin in rats. The neonatal rats were exposed (or not, as a control group) to ovalbumin via their mother's milk during lactation. The rat offspring who had maternal n-3 PUFA and ovalbumin dietary exposure were found to have lower hypersensitivity reactions and antibody responses against ovalbumin, indicating the induction of oral tolerance. Although this study was conducted in rats, it ties together the possible combined effects of maternal dietary fatty acid and food protein intakes on the development of neonatal immunological tolerance.
