    • Propagation and dissemination of infection after vaginal transmission of simian immunodeficiency virus
    • This study follows the development of systemic SIV infection after vaginal inoculation of rhesus macaques. Large vaginal inoculums are 'winnowed' down to a small number of focal founder populations of infected cells. Although there is evidence of early distal 'seeding', the infection is largely maintained in genital tissues in the first few days after inoculation. During this time, increased distal seeding is observed and at ∼day 6 there is an explosive onset of systemic infection. These data suggest that a period of local amplification is required for successful systemization of infection, a period of time in which the infection might be vulnerable to immunologic attack.

    • •] are the latest on the differences in the host response to SIV infection between natural African monkey hosts, which do not get disease, despite years of high viral replication, and AIDS-susceptible rhesus macaques. The common, compelling difference is the lack of immune activation in the former situation. A number of mechanisms have been suggested to potentially underlie this difference - differences in innate immune triggering, regulatory T cell function - but definitive determination of this important issue awaits further investigation.
