Bone marrow samples from 51 non-metastatic breast cancer patients were tested at four time points for the presence of disseminated tumor cells. All of them were positive at least once, pointing to their persistence during therapy. The question remains unanswered whether these cells exhibit any oncogenic or metastatic potential.

Clin Cancer Res 2005; 11:3697-3704. To evaluate marker genes which are most likely to be informative for the detection of micrometastatic disease, a microarray strategy together with statistical validation was used. In this analysis, mammaglobin and TFF1 turned out to have the highest sensitivity to detect disseminated breast cancer cells.
