In these experiments, we note that the rate of reaction is proportional to the surface coverage of incoming ligand and to the solution fraction of incoming ligand, both of which scale with (I - Θ(t)). This leads to the observed second-order Langmuir kinetics. Diffusion of the active species to the surface has previously been reported to be the limiting factor in 2D exchange reactions; see ref 21.
