    • Pitting of the gold surface during alkanethiol deposition, attributed to loss of gold from the surface (refs 12, 13, and 16), decreases the average gold thickness at most 1.5 Å (ref 12). This produces a negligible 0.2 Å error in the calculated thickness of the organic film.
