Agitated "unipolar" depression reconceptualized as a depressive mixed state: Implications for the antidepressant-suicide controversy
-
Akiskal HS, Benazzi F, Perugi G, Rihmer Z. Agitated "unipolar" depression reconceptualized as a depressive mixed state: implications for the antidepressant-suicide controversy. J Affect Disord 2005; 85:245-258. The bipolar nature of agitated MDD is shown. The authors found a cross-sectional link between psychomotor agitation and suicidal ideation, which may have an important impact on the treatment of this subtype of depression. Antidepressants used alone (not protected by mood stabilizing agents) may increase psychomotor agitation, and thus may also induce or increase suicidal ideation. Prospective studies are required.
