To maintain the ammonium template the "stoppering" reaction must be carried out in the absence of base. HCl is generated during the reaction, autocatalyzing ester formation. Since there is the potential for a mixture of counterions in the initially formed rotaxane salts, anion exchange was performed to ensure uniformity.
