    • Y. Liu, J. Shi, C.C. Lu, Z.B. Wang, A.I. Lyuksyutova, X. Song, and Y. Zou Ryk-mediated Wnt repulsion regulates posterior-directed growth of corticospinal tract Nat Neurosci 8 2005 1151 1159 The authors compared axonal pathfinding of Ryk-expressing corticospinal tract neurons with that of dorsolateral commissural neurons in the spinal cord. Dorsolateral commissural axons extend along the longitudinal axis in the opposite direction to Ryk-expressing corticospinal tract axons. The analysis of axonal pathfinding indicated that Ryk is required for a repulsive response to Wnt4. In the absence of Ryk Wnt4 is perceived as an attractant.

Stoeckli Sonic hedgehog guides commissural axons along the longitudinal axis of the spinal cord Nat Neurosci 8 2005 297 304 The authors identified Shh in a subtractive hybridization screen for floor-plate associated guidance cues that direct postcommissural axons rostrally along the longitudinal axis of the spinal cord. In contrast to the function of Shh as a morphogen, its effect on postcommissural axons was not mediated by the receptor complex formed by Patched and Smoothened, but rather by Hedgehog interacting protein.
