ABCB1 C3435T and G2677T/A polymorphism decreased the risk for steroid-induced osteonecrosis of the femoral head after kidney transplantation
-
Asano T, Takahashi KA, Fujioka M, et al.: ABCB1 C3435T and G2677T/A polymorphism decreased the risk for steroid-induced osteonecrosis of the femoral head after kidney transplantation. Pharmacogenetics 2003, 13:675-682. This study demonstrated that the ABCB1 3435TT genotype for a drug-transport protein had a significantly lower incidence in patients receiving steroid therapy who eventually developed osteonecrosis. This may eventually lead to being able to screen patients scheduled to undergo steroid therapy to determine who is at risk.

Multipotential mesenchymal stem cells from femoral bone marrow near the site of osteonecrosis
-
Lee H-S, Huang G-T, Chiang H, et al.: Multipotential mesenchymal stem cells from femoral bone marrow near the site of osteonecrosis. Stem Cells 2003, 21:190-199. This study indicates that multipotential MSCs removed from the bone marrow near osteonecrosis lesions can be isolated and culture expanded. This may eventually provide a source of cells for cell-based therapies.

Vascular endothelial growth factor gene transfection to enhance the repair of avascular necrosis of the femoral head of rabbit
-
Yang C, Yang S, Du J, et al.: Vascular endothelial growth factor gene transfection to enhance the repair of avascular necrosis of the femoral head of rabbit. Chin Med J (Engl) 2003, 116:1544-1548. The investigators describe the application of gene transfection for the treatment of osteonecrosis. Using a plasmid containing a gene for VEGF, they showed that angiogenesis and osteogenesis could be stimulated in an animal model of osteonecrosis.
