    • The emphasis is placed on laypersons because a remarkably high proportion of Ireland's youth then opted for a life in religion, and many Catholics attended the nondenominational colleges of the National University of Ireland while seminarians or as brothers or nuns.

    • The exception to this was the library of Trinity College, Dublin, which continued to enjoy its status as a British copyright library, despite Ireland's independence from Britain; even Trinity had scant resources for purchasing books or journals published outside the United Kingdom, and its library holdings were off limits to most students in the country since Catholic bishops declared it to be an institution whose environs were inimical to the faith and morals of young Catholics.
