Exogenous auxin does not inhibit the first stage of bud growth after decapitation but it inhibits their subsequent outgrowth.

Sandberg Auxin regulation of cytokinin biosynthesis in Arabidopsis thaliana: a factor of potential importance for auxin-cytokinin-regulated development Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 101 2004 8039 8044 By accurately measuring hormone levels and fluxes, the authors were able to show that auxin negatively regulates cytokinin biosynthesis in shoots and that this response is rapid and substantial. The response is expected to be tissue-specific as it appears to be mediated by auxin perception. This work also confirms the results of previous studies that indicated that the shoot is a major site of cytokinin biosynthesis in plants. Shoots do not rely on the roots as a cytokinin source.

    • M.A. Blazquez The right time and place for making flowers Science 309 2005 1024 1025 The author reviews recent reports on photoperiodic control of flower initiation in the journal Science. He describes major new advances in the hunt for 'florigen'. In particular, a pulse of FLOWERING LOCUS T (FT) expression in the leaf results in transport of FT mRNA to the shoot apex, and is sufficient to trigger flowering.
