Faster modifications can be attained via nonresonant processes such as Kerr effect or resonant processes in which free electrons and holes are created [see, e.g., M. Gallant, Phys. Rev. B PRBMDO 0163-1829 10.1103/PhysRevB.26.2133 26, 2133 (1982)].

The concept of group velocity would hardly mantain a clear physical significance in the presence of steep absorption. See, e.g., L. Brillouin, in Wave Propagation and Group Velocity (Academic, New York, 1960).

For nanometer scale fluctuations in the layer thickness d, a rough estimate yields an uncertainty over the ratio da of the order of 2.5×10-3. Such an uncertainty would only produce, for instance in Fig. 3, a few percents uncertainty in the two gaps position, the overall structure of the band-gap region remaining essentially the same. Any realistic photonic crystal is periodic yet with some imperfections largely due to fluctuations in the position and size of the crystal building blocks. In practice this often becomes a fundamental hindrance in reaching the required fidelity over long ranges; see, e.g., A. F. Koenderink and W. L. Vos, Phys. Rev. Lett. PRLTAO 0031-9007 10.1103/PhysRevLett.91.213902 91, 213902 (2003).
