-
Anaissie EJ, Mahfouz TH, Aslan T, et al. The natural history of respiratory syncytial virus infection in cancer and transplant patients: implications for management. Blood 2004; 103:1611-1617. A natural history study of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) in hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) recipients; most of the recipients were getting an autologous HSCT for multiple myeloma. The authors concluded that it was safe to proceed with HSCT despite isolation of RSV. They also demonstrated a higher rate of hypoxemia (23% versus 10%), respiratory failure (4% versus 2%), and death (5% versus 2%) in infected patients.
