This study in 4939 treated hypertensives ≤60 years of age showed that masked hypertension was present in 9.4% of the group and could be diagnosed by self-measured BP using a validated device in the morning and evening for 2 days.

10. Graves JW. A survey of validated automated home blood pressure monitors available for the Internet shopper. Blood Press Monit 2005; 10:103-107. Fifty percent of automatic BP machines available of the Internet were not validated and, if they were, this information was not clearly stated. Additionally, larger cuffs were optional, not always available and increased the purchase cost.
11. Cuspidi C, Meani S, Fusi V, et al. Home blood pressure measurement and its relationship with blood pressure control in a large selected hypertensive population. J Hum Hypertens 2004; 18:725-731. This study demonstrates that home BP monitoring is performed by 66% of hypertensive patients attending an out-patient hospital clinic and that those undertaking home BP monitoring had better rates of BP control. Also shows that age, male gender and educational level influence the use of home BP monitoring.
