    • A. Vazdarjanova, and J.F. Guzowski Differences in hippocampal neuronal population responses to modifications of an environmental context: evidence for distinct, yet complementary, functions of CA3 and CA1 ensembles J Neurosci 24 2004 6489 6496 This study reported the first use of Arc/H1a catFISH for mapping neural networks activated by two experiences within an animal. The major finding was that CA3 neuronal ensembles had a discontinuous, whereas CA1 ensembles had a graded, population response to minor alterations of an environmental context. These results, predicted from computational models of hippocampal function, suggest that CA3 responds in a nonlinear fashion to changes in input patterns, consistent with the competing functions of pattern separation and pattern completion. The conclusions of this study could not have been reached using conventional IEG methods and comparison of results across animals.

McNaughton Differential encoding of behavior and spatial context in deep and superficial layers of the neocortex Neuron 45 2005 667 674 This study provides evidence for what might be an important new principle of neocortical information processing. It shows that the superficial cortical laminae (layers II and III) are sensitive to the spatial and behavioral contexts in which the information represented in the deep layers is received. It is probable that this context sensitivity reflects the highly orthogonal output patterns of the hippocampal formation, which are directed preferentially to these layers.

Chaudhuri Patchy organization and asymmetric distribution of the neural correlates of face processing in monkey inferotemporal cortex Curr Biol 15 2005 993 1005 This study uses detection of both zif268 mRNA and protein, in the same brain sections, to map neural responses to two distinct visual stimuli. The concept of this approach is similar to those described in detail for catFISH here, but relies upon the differential time course of mRNA and protein appearance for the same IEG. The major finding of this study was that neurons responsive to faces versus non-face objects cluster in primate inferotemporal cortex.
