'From Dwellings to 'territories'

'Touch the Humanitarian War' is inspired by the artwork of Dominique Blain, a French Canadian artist. One of her pieces, called 'Rug' (2000), was co-produced by the artist and a Pakistani co-operative. It weaves life size images of landmines so cleverly into the design of a seemingly 'oriental carpet' that it takes eagle eyes to pick them up. One commentator noted that 'the rug conceals in its fibers the destructive effects of these pernicious weapons'. ([Montreal: Musee d'Art Contemporain de Montreal]). Once viewers realise what they are seeing, they often back away from 'Rug', not wanting to be 'blown up' by it or implicated in its acts of war. The rug collage I imagine operates in quite the opposite fashion; it does not trick the viewer into a recoil, but rather welcomes touch. Its raised figures are made compellingly tactile
