note
-
The empirical evidence offered in this article is supportive of Kimberley Hutchings's critique of some of the normative claims made by feminist ethicists about dialogue in and across public spheres. Elsewhere in this issue of Alternatives, Hutchings critiques the "civil-society" or public-sphere argument of international feminist ethicists who rely on notions of "equality" and "freedom," too dependent on optimistic visions about what discourse ethics, in whatever form, can and will provide.

Outlines of a topography of cruelty: Citizenship and civility in the era of global violence
-
Etienne Balibar has usefully described Arendt's concern as emblematic of "a politics of politics" that persists in "creating, recreating, and conserving the set of conditions within which politics as a collective participation in public affairs is possible or is not made absolutely impossible."
