Alam Globin-coupled sensors, protoglobins, and the last universal common ancestor J Inorg Biochem 99 2005 23 33 An insightful look into haem aerotactic sensors and protoglobins, both of which are found in bacteria and archaea. The authors develop the proposal that protoglobins were ancestral to all other globins. They present two scenarios for the evolution of globin-coupled sensors: either the globin domain and sensor domain occurred together in the main ancestral sequence, or the globin domain occurred alone. The existence of protoglobins is taken to support the latter scenario.
