    • Henquet C, Krabbendam L, Spauwen J, et al. Prospective cohort study of cannabis use, predisposition for psychosis and psychotic symptoms in young people. BMJ 2005; 330:11. In 2437 young people (aged 14-24 years) with and without liability to psychosis, the rate of psychotic symptoms at follow-up as a function of cannabis use and psychosis liability at baseline was investigated. Not only did cannabis use at baseline increase the cumulative incidence of psychotic symptoms at follow-up adjusted for age, sex, socio-economic status, urbanicity, childhood trauma, baseline psychosis liability and use of other drugs, tobacco and alcohol, but the effect of cannabis was much stronger in those with expression of liability to psychosis at baseline. In addition, expression of psychosis liability at baseline did not significantly predict cannabis use 4 years later (adjusted odds ratio 1.42, 95% CI = 0.88-2.31).

    • Verdoux H, Gindre C, Sorbara F, et al. Effects of cannabis and psychosis vulnerability in daily life: an experience sampling test study. Psychol Med 2003; 33:23-32. A most elegant study, making use of the so-called experience sampling method (ESM) - a structured diary momentary assessment method to measure experiences and exposures in the flow of daily life. No clinical individuals with high levels of psychosis proneness at baseline had more psychosis-like reactions to cannabis in the flow of daily life. The ESM method is very suitable to investigate the effects of drugs of abuse in daily life.
