Br J Anaesth 2004; 92:850-853. By using the up-down sequential allocation the authors could show that ropivacaine and levo-bupivacaine produce evidence of motor block within 5 min of intrathecal injection, so that both drugs could serve as tests of intrathecal administration. Thereby ropivacaine is less potent for motor block than levobupivacaine.

The MMLAC with 0.1% ropivacaine is 50% greater than the 1% concentration with a relative efficacy ratio of 1.5. This study suggests that more-diluted local-anaesthetic solutions determine less motor block by intrathecal injection.
