    • note
    • The calculations have used a Simple Z basis for the s, p, and d orbitals of Cu and Ru with radii adjusted to fit the experimental lattice constant and bulk modulus of both elements. The results were subsequently checked with simulations using more complete Double (DZ) and Triple Z (TZ) bases (Ref. 14). The shape, position and evolution of the surface states, as well as the shape of the d-band complex were essentially the same for all these bases. The correct position and evolution of the centroid of the d-band complex, however, required the use of a DZ basis for all orbitals of Ru, and a TZ one for the d orbitals of Cu.

    • note
    • The bottom of a surface state band, as determined by Angular Resolved Ultraviolet Photoelectron Spectroscopy, corresponds to the onset of the tunneling spectrum. This has to be taken at the midpoint of the rise in differential conductivity. Often it is easier to locate the maximum in the dI /dV curve, which is then referred to as the position of the surface state. For Ru(0001) the midpoint of the onset is at -140±60 meV and the maximum at +110±40 meV.
