O < 0.1 ML, oxygen atoms have high mobility at room temperature, and their average residence time per lattice site (0.05 s) is smaller than that required for their complete imaging. However, because of the line-by-line scanning of the STM image, fast-moving oxygen atoms can be easily recognized by the horizontal dashes that correspond to incomplete images of them.
