    • At small tip-sample separations, the probe dipole is effectively displaced from the center of the probe toward the sample, as shown by a numerical analysis (Ref. 19). Therefore, when we assume that the distance between the surface and the scatterer equals the radius of the latter, this only nominally corresponds to a situation in which the probe touches the surface. In reality, there would still be some space between the two bodies when the probe dipole is at the position specified by h=r.
