Sol-gel silica-entrapped metal catalysts are now commercially available. Recently, the British fine chemicals manufacturer Avecia licensed Johnson Matthey sol-gel technology for preparing organic-inorganic silica hybrid gels doped with chiral ligands named CTIS CACHy™ (CTIS: Chiral Technologies Interface System, CACHy: Catalytic Asymmetric CyanoHydrin) which allow efficient large-scale enantioselective conversion of aldehydes and ketones into chiral cyanohydrins for the pharmaceutical industry. For a recent account on the applications of the sol-gel catalyst technology in organic chemistry, see also: R. Ciriminna, M. Pagliaro, Curr. Org. Chem. 2004, 18, 1851.
