20. Since the radio frequency drive phase θ is effectively random from shot to shot, we neglect here any additional random phase that might ordinarily be included to ensure that the ensemble average interference pattern vanishes.
21. This pixel shift was calibrated by sending a single |2, 2〉 condensate through the entire experimental procedure and measuring the separation of the |2, 1〉 and |2, 2〉 components created by the π/2 spin-tip pulse.
22. A related concern is the conversion of atomic micro-motion in the TOP trap into translational motion [23]. Fortuitously, we found that, for particular choices of the rotating bias field direction at the moment the quadrupole field was extinguished, the relative velocity of the released condensates was negligible.
