8. 3J for H9. The relative stereochemistry at the spiro centre was deduced using NOESY data; the orientation of the 5-phenyl group was equatorial for the (6S) isomers and axial for the (6R) isomers. Coupling constants were consistent with normal chair conformations for both rings in each of the isomers ( 10a-d ).
