Seronegative bacteremic melioidosis caused by Burkholderia pseudomallei with ambiguous biochemical profile: clinical importance of accurate identification by 16S rRNA gene and groEL gene sequencing. J Clin Microbiol 2003; 41:3973-3977. An unusual isolate of B. pseudomallei was identified by an automated system and the patient's acute and convalescent sera were non-reactive against the conventional lipopolysaccharide of B. pseudomallei in the ELISA test. Its phenotypic characteristics and the sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene and groEL gene showed that the isolate was B. pseudomallei.

Niumsup P, Wuthiekanum V. Cloning of the class D β-lactamase gene from the Burkholderia pseudomallei and studies on its expression in ceftazidime-susceptible and -resistant strains. J Antimicrob Chemother 2002; 50:445-455. This study showed the ability of B. pseudomallei to yield mutants that overexpress β-lactamases and a detailed description of a class D β-lactamase gene.
