Low prevalence of atopy in young Danish farmers and farming students born and raised on a farm
-
Portengen L, Sigsgaard T, Omland O, et al. Low prevalence of atopy in young Danish farmers and farming students born and raised on a farm. Clin Exp Allergy 2002; 32:247-253. The study compares Danish farm students to conscripts from the same rural area. Both being a farmer and having lived on a farm in childhood contributed independently to a lower risk of sensitisation to common allergens. A farm childhood was in addition associated with a lower risk for respiratory symptoms and bronchial hyperresponsiveness.

Farm residence and exposures and the risk of allergic diseases in New Zealand children
-
Wickens K, Lane JM, Fitzharris P, et al. Farm residence and exposures and the risk of allergic diseases in New Zealand children. Allergy 2002; 57:1171-1179. In contrast to European farm studies, this analysis of a sample of rural New Zealand children found that living on a farm was associated with higher risk of having hayfever symptoms. Living on a farm in New Zealand seems to be a surrogate measure for quite different exposures to microbes than those encountered in European farms.

-
Braun-Fahrländer C, Riedler J, Herz U, et al. Environmental exposure to endotoxin and its relation to asthma in school-age children. N Engl J Med 2002; 347:869-877. This study provides evidence of a dose-dependent decrease in the risk of atopic diseases with increasing exposure to endbtoxin concentrations measured in mattress dust of school-aged children. In addition, greater endotoxin exposure reduced the cytokine production of TNF-α, IL-10, IL-12 and IFN-γ.
