The Child and Adolescent Trial for Cardiovascular Health (CATCH). JAMA 1996; 275:768-776. An ambitious program to influence the lifestyles of school-age children achieves modest changes in fat and cholesterol intakes and physical activity by intervention in school and home. There are no adverse effects, but the dietary changes are not enough to produce significantly lower serum cholesterol levels.

Prospective randomized trial of low-saturated-fat, low-cholesterol diet during the first 3 years of life. The STRIP Baby Project. Circulation 1996; 94:1386-1393. Counseling the families of 7-month-old children until 3 years of age lowers total and saturated fat intake and cholesterol intake. Intervention lowers non-HDL cholesterol by 9 mg/dl in boys, but not in girls, and intervention does no harm.

Effects of serum lipoproteins and smoking on atherosclerosis in young men and women. the PDAY Research Group. Pathobiological Determinants of Atherosclerosis in Youth
-
McGill HC Jr, McMahan CA, Malcom GT, Oalmann MC, Strong JP. Effects of serum lipoproteins and smoking on atherosclerosis in young men and women. The PDAY Research Group. Pathobiological Determinants of Atherosclerosis in Youth. Arterioscler Thromb Vasc Biol 1997; 17:95-106. Serum lipoprotein levels are associated (VLDL + LDL cholesterol, positively; HDL cholesterol, negatively) with more extensive coronary artery fatty streaks in 15-to 24-year-old individuals, and with more extensive raised lesions in 25-to 34-year-old individuals. Smoking increases raised lesions 3-fold in the abdominal aorta.
