Differences in resting metabolic rate between paraplegic and able-bodied subjects are explained by differences in body composition
-
Buchholz AC, McGillivray CF, Pencharz PB. Differences in resting metabolic rate between paraplegic and able-bodied subjects are explained by differences in body composition. Am J Clin Nutr 2003; 77:371-378. This was the first study to evaluate the RMR of men and women with complete and incomplete paraplegia and to show that the decrease in RMR is due to a reduced fat-free mass. Therefore, paraplegia does not alter the efficiency of energy metabolism.
