46. The hazards caused by pairing and recombination are unique to the first meiotic division, and the response, an exposed kinetochore, is also unique to that division. In the second meiotic division, the kinetochores are arranged just as in somatic mitosis: they are close to one another, they face precisely in opposite directions, and they are recessed in a pit (29).
