Functional magnetic resonance imaging evidence of augmented pain processing in fibromyalgia
-
Gracely RH, Petzke F, Wolf JM, et al.: Functional magnetic resonance imaging evidence of augmented pain processing in fibromyalgia. Arthritis Rheum 2002, 46:1333-1343. This study showed that comparable subjectively painful conditions resulted in activation patterns that were similar in FMS patients and controls, whereas similar pressures resulted in greater brain activation of FMS patients. These findings support the hypothesis that FMS is characterized by cortical or subcortical augmentation of pain processing.

Cytokine-induced sickness behavior
-
Kelley KW, Bluthe RM, Dantzer R, et al.: Cytokine-induced sickness behavior. Brain Behav Immun 2003, 17:S112-S118. Similar to FMS patients, sick individuals are listless, complain of fatigue and malaise, lose interest in social activities, and have significant changes in sleep patterns. They display an inability to experience pleasure, have exaggerated responses to pain, and fail to concentrate. Proinflammatory cytokines acting in the brain cause sickness behaviors. These nearly universal behavioral changes are a manifestation of a central motivational state.

Bi-directional immune-brain communication: Implications for understanding stress, pain, and cognition
-
Maier SF: Bi-directional immune-brain communication: Implications for understanding stress, pain, and cognition. Brain Behav Immun 2003, 17:69-85. Pro-inflammatory cytokine play a critical role for pain in both the periphery and the nervous system. In the periphery, these cytokines initiate the processes that signal the brain that immune activation has occurred and communicate this information over both neural and blood-borne routes. The arrival of these signals in the central nervous system induces a neural cascade that includes the de novo induction of pro-inflammatory cytokines. These cytokines in the nervous system play a key role in regulating the neural control of immune processes in the periphery.
