This is the first documented use of a continuous infusion of isotopically labelled amino acid to evaluate protein synthesis rate in both peripheral blood mononuclear cells and polymorphonuclear neutrophils from the same blood sample. This new method avoids the infusion of a flooding dose of amino acids exposing the subject to a novel stimulus, i.e. the activation of immune cells.
