Library Fiscal Year Statistics 2000
-
Between 1996 and 2000, user assistance provided at the reference desk, special collections, government documents, and the periodical service center dropped from 58,570 to 43,269 interactions, which was 15,301 less reference transactions provided in the Library. The same decreasing trend was reflected also in the use of library materials. On the other hand, use of electronic collection almost tripled from 3,378 retrievals in 1999 to 101,011 in 2000, and instruction services have been growing gradually. (accessed August 13,)

Faculty members were concerned about the increasing cost of scholarly literature and dangerous practices, such as "publishers' monopolistic behaviors" and "the packaging of groups of periodicals for libraries." They also stressed security issues, "having everything available on a few servers becomes a real danger of losing a significant portion of the nation's scientific and technical knowledge if the servers get attacked." Faculty felt strongly that librarians and scientists should closely control the expansion of scientific e-collections, "we should be alert and raise objections if major scientific publishers ever propose to eliminate widely disseminated paper archival forms of any major periodicals." Almost 30 percent of the faculty stressed their concern that "only the wealthy research professors would have access to valuable costly e-resources and this could defeat the land grant mission of this university and other universities in the country."
