    • It should be mentioned that the counterion distribution has been determined in the presence of 0.1 M tetramethylammonium chloride in solution. This bulk concentration is much less than the inner counterion concentration (on the order of 1 M). It does not change the brush profile, as shown in the next paragraph. In the absence of tetramethylammonium chloride in solution, we observe a slow disappearance of the counterions. This is attributed to exchanges with other ions (most likely sodium) that are present in the bulk at a trace level. More detail will be given in a forthcoming publication.
