Nutritional rickets with normal circulating 25-hydroxyvitamin D: A call for reexamining the role of dietary calcium intake in North American infants
-
DeLucia MC, Mitnick ME, Carpenter TO: Nutritional rickets with normal circulating 25-hydroxyvitamin D: a call for reexamining the role of dietary calcium intake in North American infants. J Clin Endocrinol Metab 2003, 88:3539-3545. These authors found that certain infants who have a rickets phenotype exhibit normal serum 25(OH)D levels but low levels of calcium. Calcium supplementation alone resulted in a surprising normalization of skeletal findings on radiograph.

Amelioration of osteoporosis and hypovitaminosis D by sunlight exposure in stroke patients
-
Sato Y, Metoki N, Iwamoto J, et al.: Amelioration of osteoporosis and hypovitaminosis D by sunlight exposure in stroke patients. Neurology 2003, 61:338-342. This randomized controlled trial found a striking reduction in hip fracture rate accompanying increases in 25(OH)D levels with the intervention of sunlight exposure over a year period in stroke patients in Japan. These data suggest an immediate role for sunlight in fracture prevention for populations in long-term care facilities.

Feskanich D, Willett WC, Colditz GA: Calcium, vitamin D, milk consumption, and hip fractures: a prospective study among postmenopausal women. Am J Clin Nutr 2003, 77:504-511. This study evaluated the association between postmenopausal hip fracture risk and intake of calcium, vitamin D, and milk in a large prospective cohort of 72,337 postmenopausal women followed over a period of 18 years. Adequate vitamin D intake was found to be associated with a lower risk of osteoporotic hip fractures, but neither milk nor a high-calcium diet was associated with a lower risk of hip fracture.

-
Mann ST, Stracke H, Lange U, et al.: Vitamin D3 in patients with various grades of chronic pancreatitis, according to morphological and functional criteria of the pancreas. Dig Dis Sci 2003, 48:533-538. These authors show a direct association between the degree of vitamin D deficiency and grade of chronic pancreatitis.

Vitamin D deficiency in pregnant women from a non-European ethnic minority population - An interventional study
-
Datta S, Alfaham M, Davies DP, et al.: Vitamin D deficiency in pregnant women from a non-European ethnic minority population-an interventional study. BJOG 2002, 109:905-908. This study found that half of women from non-European ethnic minorities who were screened at their first prenatal visit were vitamin D-deficient. In those who were checked at delivery, 25(OH)D levels had increased, but the group mean was still low at 11 ng/mL.

Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D status of adolescents and adults in two seasonal subpopulations from NHANES III
-
Looker AC, Dawson-Hughes B, Calvo MS, et al.: Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D status of adolescents and adults in two seasonal subpopulations from NHANES III. Bone 2002, 30:771-777. This study reports results of 25(OH)D serum analysis of 18,875 people examined in the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III 1988-1994). These investigators found a low rate of severe vitamin D deficiency among community-dwelling adolescents and adults, but a high rate of insufficiency (from 25 to 57% depending on age and gender). Blacks in each age and gender group had a higher rate of vitamin D insufficiency, with 69% of black females with vitamin D levels lower than 50 mmol/L.

Hypovitaminosis D prevalence and determinants among African American and white women of reproductive age: Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 1988-1994
-
Nesby-O'Dell S, Scanlon KS, Cogswell ME, et al.: Hypovitaminosis D prevalence and determinants among African American and white women of reproductive age: third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 1988-1994. Am J Clin Nutr 2002, 76:187-192. This analysis of National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data revealed a significant racial discrepancy in hypovitaminosis D prevalence between African American (42.4%) and white women (4.2%) age 15 to 49 years. Risk factors for hypovitaminosis D for African American women included consumption of milk or breakfast cereal fewer than three times per week, no use of vitamin D supplements, winter season, urban residence, low body mass index, and no use of oral contraceptives.

-
Trivedi DP, Doll R, Khaw KT: Effect of four monthly oral vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) supplementation on fractures and mortality in men and women living in the community: randomised double blind controlled trial. BMJ 2003, 326:469. This study was a community-based, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of oral vitamin D3 given every 4 months, with a statistically significant lower risk of first fracture, relative risk 0.78 (95% CI, 0.61-0.99, P = 0.04), and of first hip, wrist, forearm, or vertebral fracture, relative risk 0.67 (CI, 0.48-0.93, P = 0.02).

-
Elliott ME, Binkley NC, Carnes M, et al.: Fracture risks for women in long-term care: high prevalence of calcaneal osteoporosis and hypovitaminosis D. Pharmacotherapy 2003, 23:702-710. A rationale for vitamin D prescribing in a falls clinic population
-
Dhesi JK, Moniz C, Close JC, et al.: A rationale for vitamin D prescribing in a falls clinic population. Age Ageing 2002, 31:267-271. Routine vitamin D supplementation is suggested to attendees at a falls clinic based on a 72% prevalence of hypovitaminosis D, with risk factors for this deficiency including low serum albumin and low number of outings per week.

Seasonal variation, hip fracture and vitamin D levels in Southern Tasmania
-
Inderjeeth CA, Barrett T, Al-Lahham Y, et al.: Seasonal variation, hip fracture and vitamin D levels in Southern Tasmania. N Z Med J 2002, 115:183-185. This cross-sectional survey found a high rate of vitamin D deficiency and secondary hyperparathyroidism among hospitalized patients. Lower vitamin D levels were associated with lower activity levels, less habitual sun exposure, and poorer physical functional status.
