No ovarian tumors were reported. Interestingly, there was methylation in the promoters of the wild type allele of Hic1 heterozygotes, suggesting an epigenetic suppression mechanism for Hic1 in cancer.

    • S. Liu, and S.H. Leppla Retroviral insertional mutagenesis identifies a small protein required for synthesis of diphthamide, the target of bacterial ADP-ribosylation toxins Mol Cell 12 2003 603 613 The authors demonstrate that KTI11/DESR1 function participates in the first step of the diphthamide biosynthesis pathway together with yeast DPH2. In addition, KTI11/DESR1 is involved in the Elongator complex of RNA pol II holoenzyme, suggesting KTI11/DESR1 is required for multiple cellular functions.

    • L. Fichtner, D. Jablonowski, A. Schierhorn, H.K. Kitamoto, Rtark MJR, and R. Schaffrath Elongator's toxin-target (TOT) function is nuclear localization sequence dependent and suppressed by post-translational modification Mol Microbiol 49 2003 1297 1309 Using the TAP-tag technique, the authors demonstrated that KTI11 can form a complex with the Elongator subunits (Tot1/Elp1, Tot2/Elp2 and Tot3/Elp3), Yil103W, DPH2 and translation elongation factor, suggesting that KTI11 may functionally link Elongator function and the diphthamide biosynthesis pathway in translation. The authors also showed that dph2 and yil103w mutants were partially resistant to zymocin treatment, implying that the DPH2 gene family may connect the Elongator's function and translation.
