    • The greater distance of 40 to 120 bp from the TATA box to the transcription start site of S. cerevisiae pol II promoters may be attributed to unwinding at the same position as in other eukaryotes, followed by translocation of the unwound region downstream ("scanning") until a sequence favorable for initiation is reached.

    • We thank N. Thompson and R. Burgess for generously providing antibody for protein purification, P. Jadzinsky for help with EM images, and HP for providing a Unix workstation. Portions of this research were carried out at the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory (SSRL), a national user facility operated by Stanford University on behalf of the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Basic Energy Sciences. The SSRL Structural Molecular Biology Program is supported by the Department of Energy, Office of Biological and Environmental Research, and by the National Institutes of Health, National Center for Research Resources, Biomedical Technology Program, and the National Institute of General Medical Sciences. We thank the staff of the Berkeley Center for Structural Biology for help at the Advanced Light Source. The Advanced Light Source is supported by the Director, Office of Science, Office of Basic Energy Sciences, Materials Sciences Division, of the U.S. Department of Energy under Contract No. DE-AC03-76SF00098 at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. D.A.B. was supported by postdoctoral fellowship PF-00-014-01-GMC from the American Cancer Society. K.D.W. was supported by Medical Scientist Training Program. This research was supported by NIH grants GM4998S and AI21144 to R.D.K. Structure factors and coordinates have been deposited at the protein data bank (accession code 1R5U).
