    • The same product could be obtained in very high purity when the disubstituted imidazolium chloride was reacted with silver oxide in the presence of water to yield the basic hydroxide, which was then titrated with aqueous glycolic acid. The careful thermal control of this process was necessary to avoid Hofmann elimination which, coupled with the lower yield and high cost, resulted in the adoption of the method described, despite its attendant disadvantages in terms of the need for chromatography
