41. In his analysis of the spinon Fermi surface, Nagaosa (Ref. 10) presents a separate argument for a deconfined phase in the first part of his paper. By a decomposition of the gauge field into its longitudinal and transverse parts, he reduces the theory to an effective XY model with dissipation. However, this approximation leads to a model with only line vortices, and so also effectively neglects instanton events at points in spacetime.
