This article uses several terms to describe different types of civil conflict. Ethnic conflict refers to spontaneous mass eruptions of ethnic antagonisms within a state. Sectarian conflict refers to conflicts between narrow or partisan sects or factions. Intercommunal conflict refers to conflicts between communities that do not necessarily have ethnic roots, such as some religious or socio-economic conflicts.
