Induction of sensitivity to activation-induced death in primary CD4+ cells: A role for interleukin-2 in the negative regulation of responses by mature CD4+ T cells
-
Wang R, Rogers AM, Rush BJ, Russell JH: Induction of sensitivity to activation-induced death in primary CD4+ cells: a role for interleukin-2 in the negative regulation of responses by mature CD4+ T cells. Eur J Immunol 1996, 26:2263-2270. Shows that IL-2, but not IL-4, IL-7 or IL-15, provides the cytokine signal necessary for normal naïve mouse CD4+ T cells stimulated in vitro with ConA or plate bound anti CD3 to become sensitive to activation induced cell death.

Interleukin-2 receptor common gamma-chain signaling cytokines regulate activated T cell apoptosis in response to growth factor withdrawal: Selective induction of anti-apoptotic (bcl-2, bcl-xL) but not pro-apoptotic (bax, bcl-xS) gene expression
-
Akbar AN, Borthwick NJ, Wickremasinghe RG, Panayoitidis P, Pilling D, Bofill M, Krajewski S, Reed JC, Salmon M: Interleukin-2 receptor common gamma-chain signaling cytokines regulate activated T cell apoptosis in response to growth factor withdrawal: selective induction of anti-apoptotic (bcl-2, bcl-xL) but not pro-apoptotic (bax, bcl-xS) gene expression. Eur J Immunol 1996, 26:294-299. This paper shows thai the ability to rescue activated human T cells from cell death following growth factor withdrawal is not a unique feature of IL-2, but is exhibited by all cytokines using the common γ-chain of the IL-2 receptor for signal transduction.

Unequal death in T helper cell (Th) 1 and Th2 effectors: TM, but not Th2, effectors undergo rapid Fas/FasL-mediated apoptosis
-
Zhang X, Brunner T, Carter L, Dutton RW, Rogers P, Bradley L, Sato T, Reed JC, Green D, Swain SL: Unequal death in T helper cell (Th) 1 and Th2 effectors: TM, but not Th2, effectors undergo rapid Fas/FasL-mediated apoptosis. J Exp Med 1997, 185:1837-1849. This paper draws attention to the differences between mouse Th1 and Th2 cells in becoming sensitive to CD95/C095L mediated activation induced cell death. The results suggest that in cases where the CD95/CD95L system fails the naturally more sensitive Th1 cells may unduly accumulate and thus contribute to autoimmune diseases associated with hyperactivity of Th1 cells.
