General Procedure for the Photochemical Benzannulation of Carbene Complex 2: A solution of 1 mmol of carbene complex and 5 mmol of alkyne in 60 ml of tetrahydrofuran was irradiated for 30 min at -20 °C using a mercury vapor lamp (Phillips 125 HPK) and quartz glassware. A color change from purple to brownish yellow occurred. After evaporation of the solvent the residue was chromatographed on silica gel using petroleum ether/diethyl ether mixtures as eluent to give the pure 2,3-dihydro-6-benzopyranols as yellow oils.
