    • -1. No intensity corrections have been applied to the displayed spectra. Resonance Raman spectra were obtained in an identical manner except that the YAG second harmonic (<0.1 mJ/pulse) was used for excitation and a 532 nm notch filter was placed before the spectrograph entrance slit to reduce stray light. Both HR and RR spectra were accumulated for 5-15 min. No power dependence of the spectral features was observed over a factor of about 10 for either RR or HR spectra. The synthesis and characterization of chromophores 1b-5, 2b-4, and 2b-5 is described in ref 9.

    • This implies exponential dephasing, which is rarely valid for molecules in fluid solution. However, application of a more sophisticated model for solvent broadening should not affect our conclusions about relative RR and RHR intensity patterns.
