    • A viscosity dependent rate constant may occur when the barrier-crossing process has a dissipative nature, experiences frictional coupling with the medium (solvent). For the case of "full" solute-solvent coupling, γ → 1, the Smoluchowski limit. Deviation from this limit may be caused by weak, or intermediate, solute-solvent coupling or a change toward a weaker electronic coupling, as discussed later.
