    • We cannot rule out the possibility that different mechanisms contribute to such an enhancement. For wavelengths shorter than ca. 680 nm the laser enters the far tail of the one-photon ground state absorption. Under these circumstances a conventional RSA mechanism may become operative adding to the one-photon enhanced instantaneous TPA and to the TPA-ESA.

    • 21 at room temperature, afforded the bromoderivative 5 in 82 % yield as a dark violet solid (mp = 204 °C). Finally, 6 was converted into the hydroxylated derivative 1 by treatment with a 2:1 excess of diethanolamine in refluxing acetonitrile, using trietylamine as a base. The reaction mixture was refluxed for 5 hours, then the solvent was evaporated yielding a dark oil which was dissolved in the minimum amount of ethanol. The resulting solution was diluted with diethyl ether till a complete precipitation of a violet, very hygroscopic, solid corresponding to the expected compound (80.3 % yield) was observed. An analytic sample was isolated as a fluoborate salt by treating an ethanolic saturated solution of 6 with an excess of aqueous fluoboric acid.

    • note
    • 4) the sol was refluxed 1.5 hours at 80°C. The resulting sol, named GTZ in the following, was used to embed FULP or BisOHPEPEP. FULP was dissolved in tetrahydrofuran (2.5 mg/cc) while BisOHPEPEP in ethanol (1mg/cc) and then these solutions were added to GTZ under magnetic stirring. A following ultrasonic treatment is necessary to well disperse FULP or BisOHPEPEP molecules and the two doped solutions were left one night at 60°C in a close vessel. After this procedure, the larger portion of the solvent (THF or-ethanol) can be evaporated from the doped solutions without a trace of precipitation effects. A controlled amount of the concentrated solutions were allowed to gelify in open vessel at 60°C, in order to obtain different bulk thickness. After 3 days these bulk were thinned and polished to get the desired specific thickness.
