    • note
    • One possible explanation that we would like to offer is that the electronic environment of the 5′-end of adenosine and its phosphate analogues affects the binding affinity. More specifically, whereas the anti-ATP aptamer can tolerate one negative charge on the alpha-phosphate group of ATP and ADP, the two negative charges on the monophosphate group of AMP interferes the aptamer-target binding. Although interesting, this point is not pursued further as the focus of the current investigation is directed at the designs of structure-switching signaling aptamer.
